Over the past decade, the interactive video advertising landscape has undergone significant transformations. It has been approximately eight years since the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) initiated a shift in how interactive video ads are served, moving away from the Video Player-Ad Interface Definition (VPAID) format toward the Video Ad Serving Template (VAST). Despite the IAB’s early vision, the transition from VPAID to VAST has been gradual and, at times, hindered by the limitations of existing technologies.

The Rise and Decline of VPAID
VPAID was once seen as a revolutionary format, enabling interactive video ads that could engage users in ways traditional pre-roll video ads could not. However, VPAID was not without its issues. The technology required injecting JavaScript and HTML directly into video players, leading to security vulnerabilities and performance instability. This made many publishers reluctant to adopt VPAID on their platforms, fearing the associated risks.
One of VPAID’s biggest downfalls was its incompatibility with mobile, server-side ad insertion (SSAI), and connected TV (CTV) environments. As the media landscape shifted toward these platforms, VPAID’s web-centric design increasingly limited its relevance. Furthermore, the growing demand for a more secure and stable ad-serving environment exacerbated its limitations. As a result, VPAID’s usage began to decline, and publishers and advertisers started searching for alternatives that could meet the demands of modern digital video.
VAST: The New Standard
Enter VAST, a more streamlined and secure alternative. Although VAST technically predates VPAID, it wasn’t until its 2019 updates that the format gained widespread adoption. These enhancements allowed VAST to leapfrog ahead of VPAID by addressing many of the latter’s shortcomings. VAST ads are pre-rendered, which allows publishers to preview them and ensure they meet content and technical standards before being served. This feature minimizes risks, such as performance issues or disruptions to the user experience, that were common with VPAID.
VAST’s simplicity also plays a key role in its success. Because the format is more restrictive and does not allow for dynamic content insertion like VPAID, it significantly reduces security risks. While this might limit the interactive capabilities of video ads, the trade-off in stability and security has made it an attractive option for publishers looking to maintain a safe and reliable ad environment.
Additionally, VAST’s compatibility with mobile, CTV, and SSAI environments has opened up new opportunities for advertisers. As these platforms grow in popularity, VAST’s cross-platform functionality has become a crucial feature, allowing brands to reach wider audiences without sacrificing ad performance or security.
The Introduction of SIMID
As part of its push toward more interactive and secure video ads, the IAB also introduced the Secure Interactive Media Interface Definition (SIMID) alongside VAST. SIMID is designed to enable interactive ads in a secure environment, while also supporting mobile, SSAI, and CTV devices. By allowing interactive ads to run safely across a wider array of platforms, SIMID represents a massive leap forward for advertisers seeking to engage users on multiple devices.
However, SIMID does have some limitations. It currently only works on HTML5-supported devices, which excludes certain CTV platforms. Despite this, SIMID’s introduction marks a significant step toward a more unified and secure interactive video advertising landscape, addressing many of the concerns that plagued VPAID.
The VAST CTV Addendum and the Future of Video Advertising
As ad-supported OTT video continues to grow in popularity, the IAB has been proactive in ensuring that VAST remains relevant in this new landscape. In 2024, the IAB’s Advanced TV Working Group released the VAST CTV Addendum, which provides additional guidance on how to best serve ads in CTV environments. This reflects the IAB’s understanding of the shifting video consumption habits of modern audiences and the need for ad technology to evolve accordingly.
Despite these advancements, the transition from VPAID to VAST and SIMID has not been without its challenges. Interactive video ads are now more common, but many publishers are still using outdated technologies that slow down the adoption of newer formats. Moreover, some publishers remain unaware of the need to update their video players to support the latest VAST versions, only realizing it when they encounter performance issues.
The Advantages of VAST Over VPAID
The ongoing transition from VPAID to VAST highlights the clear advantages that VAST offers over its predecessor. Key benefits include:
