Paramount+ is set to launch its ad-supported streaming tier in the UK on November 20, marking another significant step in the platform’s expansion across Europe and beyond. This new tier adds to Paramount’s existing multi-tier subscription model, which aims to give customers a range of pricing options tailored to their preferences. By offering both ad-supported and premium tiers, Paramount+ is aligning with the growing consumer demand for flexible subscription models, especially as viewers increasingly embrace ad-supported services for cost savings. This expansion follows similar launches in markets like Australia, Canada, and France, underscoring Paramount’s ambitions to capture a larger global audience.

The ad-supported tier launch comes despite a recent controversy involving Sky Media, Paramount’s UK ad sales partner. Sky Media revealed earlier this year that it had under-reported millions of pounds in ad revenue to several media partners since 2017, including Paramount, which owns Channel 5 and MTV. However, Paramount has confirmed that this revelation has not disrupted its ad sales efforts or the scheduled launch of the ad-funded service. Both Paramount’s own international ad sales team and Sky Media will work jointly to manage ad sales for the new UK ad-supported tier.
Paramount’s choice to maintain Sky Media as a partner, despite the reporting error, reflects a strategic decision that appears to focus on continuity and stability in the market. By leveraging Sky Media’s local expertise and Paramount’s own global advertising network, the partnership aims to capture advertising revenue from companies looking to target audiences on one of the UK’s newest ad-supported streaming platforms. Lee Sears, Paramount’s President of International Advertising Sales, highlighted the value of the ad-supported model, stating that it offers advertisers unique opportunities to engage audiences across Paramount’s robust digital ecosystem, EyeQ. EyeQ provides a centralized platform for advertising campaigns that span Paramount’s diverse array of shows, movies, and franchises, which has been a key part of its growth strategy.
Paramount+ has invested heavily in programming that resonates with both global and regional audiences. New and returning shows set to premiere this autumn include Landman, a drama starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and Jon Hamm; Special Ops: Lioness, featuring Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña; The Agency, a spy thriller produced by George Clooney and starring Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere; and new episodes of the hit series Yellowstone. By offering a range of shows that appeal to varied tastes, Paramount+ aims to capture both mainstream and niche audiences, ensuring a broad spectrum of engagement.
According to Marco Nobili, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Paramount+ International Markets, Paramount’s multi-tier model has seen significant success in markets like Canada and Australia, where approximately half of the platform’s subscribers choose the ad-supported tier. This trend aligns with the rising popularity of cost-effective, ad-funded streaming options across Europe, making the UK an attractive market for the expansion. Nobili emphasized that giving customers pricing options has been integral to Paramount+’s growth, and the company anticipates similar adoption rates in the UK, especially as economic factors drive interest in more affordable subscription plans.
For Paramount, the ad-supported tier is not just a cost-saving measure for consumers but also a new revenue stream that taps into the rising demand for digital video advertising in the UK. Sky Media’s infrastructure is expected to play a key role in monetizing the new tier, with targeted ad placements that provide businesses a way to reach Paramount+ audiences across devices. Sears emphasized that the new ad tier gives brands access to Paramount’s globally recognized franchises and content, creating an attractive advertising environment that combines reach with brand association.
The introduction of an ad-supported tier also fits into Paramount’s broader strategy to grow its global subscriber base through incremental market penetration. As streaming audiences in the UK and Europe become increasingly fragmented across platforms, Paramount’s choice to offer ad-supported options reflects an understanding that subscription fatigue is a real issue. Viewers today are more selective with their subscriptions, often balancing costs and content availability, so the flexibility of Paramount’s multi-tiered approach addresses these shifting viewer habits.
The timing of Paramount’s ad-supported launch aligns with broader industry trends. With Disney+ also launching ad-supported tiers in several regions, and with Netflix recently testing its own ad model, Paramount+’s move is part of a broader industry shift where streaming giants are recognizing the potential in ad-supported offerings. This trend is driven by both economic pressures and an increasing willingness from viewers to accept ads in exchange for lower subscription costs. For advertisers, this shift represents a golden opportunity to access streaming audiences who might otherwise be difficult to reach via traditional linear TV or premium ad-free streaming services.
Looking ahead, Paramount is expected to continue leveraging its platform’s global reach to drive brand partnerships and advertising innovation. The UK launch is just one part of its ongoing international strategy, with more European countries likely to follow. As Sears noted, Paramount+ is dedicated to creating a connected platform for ad campaigns across all its streaming properties, helping brands achieve reach while maintaining a focus on engaging content. With competitors like Disney and Amazon investing in similar ad-supported models, Paramount’s focus on choice and flexibility gives it an edge in positioning itself as a customer-centric platform.
The launch of an ad-supported tier on Paramount+ reflects a notable shift in the streaming landscape, where affordability and flexibility are becoming central to subscriber acquisition and retention strategies. As Paramount+ continues to expand, its multi-tiered approach positions it well to capture audiences seeking quality entertainment at varied price points.
