Because they couldn’t debug it!
Why did the UI/UX designer get mad at the stuffing?
Because it wasn’t user-friendly!

Election Night in the United States is a major event that draws millions of viewers across broadcast and cable news channels. On the most recent Election Night, ABC outperformed its peers among the “Big 4” broadcast networks, leading in total viewers and key demographic segments. From 8 to 11 pm ET, ABC averaged approximately 5.7 million total viewers, securing the top spot over NBC’s 5.3 million, CBS’s 3.5 million, and Fox’s 2.1 million. For the first time in 16 years, ABC’s “Election Night” coverage ranked No. 1 across three major metrics: total viewership, Adults 18-49, and Adults 25-54.

In addition to broadcast networks, cable channels also attracted substantial audiences, particularly Fox News Channel, which led all cable news outlets with 9.8 million total viewers. MSNBC and CNN followed, pulling in 5.5 million and 4.7 million viewers, respectively. Fox News led the crucial 25-54 demographic among cable and broadcast networks combined, marking it as a favorite for Election Night viewing. When adding up Fox properties such as Fox News and Fox Business, the total viewership for Fox-affiliated outlets reached 13 million.
Further reporting from Nielsen revealed that a total of 42.3 million viewers tuned in across an array of networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW, and additional cable and streaming news providers like Telemundo, Univision, CNBC, and others. Interestingly, Prime Video had yet to report its viewership numbers for the live election coverage hosted by Brian Williams, suggesting that final figures could increase with further data from streaming platforms.
Comparing these figures to previous Election Nights offers insights into viewership trends. Four years prior, during the highly contentious 2020 election that saw former Vice President Joe Biden emerge as the winner over incumbent President Donald Trump, viewership reached an estimated 56.9 million people, including out-of-home audiences. This was already a 30% decrease from the 2016 election viewership, when Donald Trump faced former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. On Election Night 2020, Fox News again led with almost 14 million viewers, with CNN coming in second at 9.1 million. ABC was the top broadcast network that year as well, with an audience of 6.1 million viewers.
The recent 2024 Election Night viewership reflects changes in how Americans consume political news and coverage. Cable news, led by Fox News, continues to be a preferred source for election night results, especially for demographics such as Adults 25-54. The ongoing trend of declining viewership across election cycles, especially compared to the peak in 2016, points to possible shifts in audience interest, media consumption patterns, and platform diversity.
Notably, Fox News’s dominant position in both cable and overall news viewership suggests that its audience remains robust, while ABC’s rise among broadcast networks shows its ability to capture attention during high-stakes events. The variations in numbers also highlight the contrasting dynamics between cable and broadcast channels. Broadcast networks, such as ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, generally reach broader but sometimes less specialized audiences compared to cable channels. However, these networks still face intense competition from dedicated cable news channels that often appeal to viewers seeking more in-depth or continuous news coverage.
While traditional television continues to be the main outlet for election coverage, streaming and digital platforms are increasingly becoming part of the viewing landscape. The unreported figures from Prime Video underscore the relevance of streaming in news broadcasting, particularly for audiences who prefer online media. This trend may indicate a growing competition between traditional broadcast and cable channels and streaming services, potentially impacting future viewership and broadcasting strategies.
As Election Nights continue to capture the nation’s attention, networks are increasingly leveraging digital and social media, offering real-time updates, analysis, and commentary. While total TV viewership numbers reflect an apparent decline, online engagement might be compensating, pointing toward a fragmented but active audience base. Future election coverage will likely need to account for both traditional viewership and digital engagement to fully capture the scope of audience interest and participation.
In summary, the latest Election Night coverage underscores the shifts in media consumption, the dominance of specific networks in demographics, and the steady but fragmented interest in political news. ABC’s broadcast success, coupled with Fox News’s cable performance, reflects the adaptability and ongoing relevance of established networks in a shifting media landscape. As viewers increasingly turn to varied platforms, Election Night may continue to be a valuable barometer for measuring audience trends in news media consumption.
